2012 Beneficiaries
Proceeds from the annual Whidbey Island Garden Tour are donated to selected causes and non-profit organizations that support the improvement, restoration, and maintenance of our common habitat. Projects that emphasize public space enhancement and education are of particular merit in the eyes of the WIGT Board. Award decisions are made in November and funds are distributed post-tour in July.
The following organizations were selected to receive funds raised through the sale of tickets to the 2012 tour.
- Calyx Community Arts School
- Provides multilingual arts and nature integrated learning for the whole child (ages 4 – 8) and has teamed up with South Whidbey Tilth to create a Children’s Art Garden in 2012.
- Deer Lagoon Grange
- Supports the rural way of life by providing education, community activities and support, and grass-roots non-partisan resolutions for action at the annual Washington State Grange Convention. Expect to see new rain gardens and enhanced wildlife habitat with native plants at the Grange Hall in 2012.
- Friends of the Langley Library
- Focus on charitable, literary and educational purposes which further promote the activities, operations, and facilities of Langley Library. They will be renovating the library’s exterior landscape in 2012.
- Good Cheer Food Bank Garden
- Teaches youth and home gardeners how to grow food for family use and provides fresh produce for the Food Bank. Stop by in the Spring to pick up veggie starts to help grow food in your own garden for the Food Bank.
- Senior Services of Island County
- Envisions a community in which the basic needs of all residents are met, enabling them to lead purposeful, healthy, active, contented and socially integrated lives. The Grandmother Garden will be created in 2012 at the South Whidbey Center in Bayview.
- Whidbey Institute at Chinook
- Learning from the Land Program informs, inspires, and renews people to serve a future that sustains us all. Service learning with youth in the Westgarden focuses on sustainability education, and an irrigation system in 2012 will allow even more food production (some of which is distributed to the Good Cheer Food Bank).
- WSU Extension/Island County 4-H
- 4-H is in the business of growing kids! We do this by working in our community to offer a wide range of opportunities for K-12 youth. Join us to enhance our various public gardens on Whidbey in 2012 thanks to funding from the Whidbey Island Garden Tour.
