Pacific Northwest Wildflower Meadow

As the saying goes about new plants: The first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps, and the third year it leaps!

Come see what plants do after five years in the ground in this example of a front lawn revisited. The 1/4-acre sloped yard has undergone a transformation from grass and weeds to a thriving example of the power that native plants pack in to a garden. Lupine, yarrow, and other wildflowers have been allowed to leap into abundance so that the homeowners can spend more time on recreation and less on yard work responsibilities. Over three dozen species of native plants and grasses include Henderson’s Checkermallow, Oregon sunshine, Pacific gumweed, and Showy fleabane. With such a diverse plant palette, the insects, birds, and other critters benefit as well, and as the years progress, many of the plants are soil fixers serving to improve the soil quality and fertility. When approached about being on this tour, the garden’s creator said it “might be on the wild side” for the WIGT. We hope you will walk the looping path, admire the many blooms, and feel the spirit of the WIGT’s founders who admired Shakespeare’s poem “Spring" which advises: Do paint the meadows with delight.
